Steering knuckle and hub — removal and installation [Toyota Camry XV20]

Removal



1. Loosen the hub nut (see subsection 9.1.14.). Loosen the wheel nuts, lift the car and remove the wheel.

2. Remove the brake caliper and secure it with wire (see subsection 10.5.). Remove the caliper bracket, remove the brake disc from the hub.

3. Let go (but don't turn away) bolts for fastening the strut to the steering knuckle.

4. Disconnect the steering tie rod end from the steering knuckle (see subsection 9.2.3.).


5. Unscrew the bolts and nuts securing the ball joint to the lower suspension arm. Now unscrew the bolts securing the strut to the steering knuckle.

6. Push the axle shaft out of the hub (see subsection 9.3.2.). Secure the end of the axle shaft.

7. Separate the steering knuckle from the strut. Remove the ball joint if necessary.

Installation



1. Install the steering knuckle and hub in place, insert the axle shaft.

2. Insert the steering knuckle into the strut flange. Tighten the nuts and bolts, but do not tighten.

3. Attach the ball joint to the lower suspension arm, tighten the bolts and nuts without tightening them.

4. Attach the steering knuckle to the steering knuckle. Tighten the strut mounting bolts and nuts, the ball joint mounting to the control arm, and the steering rod end nut to the specified torques.



5. Install the brake caliper (see subsection 10.5.) and brake disc (see subsection 10.6.).

6. Install the hub, tighten the nut.

7. Install the wheel and tighten the nuts.

8. Lower the vehicle, tighten the wheel nuts to the specified torque. Tighten the hub nut to the specified torque.
